The Nobles

Feudalism was the system or organization of Medieval society. In return for the lord's protection and the right to work the land, the peasants performed services and paid fees to the lord. The lord made the laws and settled disputes between people in the manor. The nobles were the subjects of the king and honored the Christian teachings of the Catholic Church

Royalty included those who were born into or married into the ruling class. They included the king, queen, princes and princesses, dukes, duchesses, earls, barons, baronesses and maybe a few more.

Knights were nobles who were trained to serve and protect. This knight is from the early Middle Ages. He is wearing chain mail to protect himself from weapons thrown at him.

This is a knight of the later Middle Ages. This is called plate armor.  This is the image we’re used to seeing — the one portrayed in movies.

This knight has a different type of armor. He is wearing chain mail on his head and leather on his body.  This was often worn by knights who could not afford plate armor.

This is Maid Marion and the captain of the guard. She was a noble woman. He oversaw the guards who were safeguarding the manor.

Sir Nigel was a nobleman who lived in the manor. (Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a book titled Sir Nigel.)

This noble woman wore a snood which covered her hair. It was considered very fashionable during the Middle Ages.

This is the view from the back of a snood.

This noble woman is enjoying a beverage at the faire.
