PBS 45 & 49 and the Emmy Award-winning PBS series Reading
Rainbow invite children in kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd
grades to create their own picture books for the 11th annual Reading
Rainbow’s Young Writers & Illustrators Contest.

packet. Contest entries must be postmarked by Tuesday, March 1,
2005.
Local grand prizes winners from each grade level receive $50 and
$25 gift certificates from Borders Books and Music. They also will
be entered in the national Reading Rainbow Young Writers
and Illustrators Contest. Prizes at the national level
include computers, VCRs and Reading Rainbow Library books and tapes
for winners and their schools and public libraries.

Educational Objective: Empathizing with children whose parents
are in prison

month to visit the girl’s father in prison.
Unique Monique, Wednesday, Jan. 19 – filmed locally at the
Twinsburg Twins Day Festival
Educational Objective: Exploring what it means to be unique
Monique’s school uniform doesn’t allow her to express
herself so she experiments with ways to be unique before finally
discovering a way to stand out without breaking the rules.
At the Twinsburg Twins Days Festival, join twins as they celebrate
their alikeness and their individuality.
Mr. George Baker, Thursday, Jan. 20
Educational Objective: Learning is a life-long endeavor
Harry sits on the porch with 100-year-old Mr. George Baker who
can dance and play the drums but goes to school, just like Harry,
so he can learn to read.
Beegu, Friday, Jan. 21
Educational Objective: Exploring the excitement and wonder
of space
Beegu, a small space creature, finds no welcome on Earth until
she meets some children on a playground.
Two Old Potatoes and Me, Monday, Jan. 24
Educational Objective: Turning something old into something
new
After a young girl finds two old potatoes at her father’s
house, they plant and tend them to see if they will have new potatoes
in September.
