Poetry Videos

Overview

A Choose a poem of medium length from our Brit Lit textbook. A poem between 12 and 30 lines is long enough to demonstrate good reading expression, yet short enough to maintain audience interest in a video presentation.

Practice reading the poem aloud; decide how the poem should best be interpreted. Be creative here. Consider a modern-day adaptation or draw out an individual application.

Read aloud for me in the hall October 5-6. I will be glad to hear readings earlier — at the beginning of class, before, or after school.

Select the visual accompaniment to enhance the meaning of the poem. Avoid too literal of a match. Keep your plans simple, yet still innovative and interesting.

The grade is given to the speaker of the poem. The speaker should be the one making all the decisions on the production of the video but need not appear in the video.

Restrictions: we will break no copyright laws. Music, sound, and images will be either original or non-copyrighted.

In addition to the poetry video itself are these following requirements:

  • Proposal

  • Storyboard — well-detailed, well-explained (frame subject, perspective, motion, sound)

  • Personal schedule for completing assignment

  • Initial poem paraphrase

  • Well-developed, researched analysis of poem

  • Director’s cut to be filmed

The video project will be graded on the following aspects:

  • Clarity — enunciation, articulation, pronunciation

  • Pace — slow enough, varied, effective pauses

  • Punctuation and end lines accurately acknowledged

  • Vocal expression — affection, not affected; varied, effective emphasis, shades of tone heard

  • Physical expression — effective gestures, body movement, and acting

  • Seriousness of intent — presentation is true to the poem, not a parody, mocked, or turned into a comedy

  • Effective visual images — not too literal, yet not demonstrating a misunderstanding of the poem; background carefully chosen Effective sound or music — optional (save a version without a sound background track)

  • Clean — no rough edges, no parts left in that should have been edited out or no missing parts that were cut off by accident
