Tech Tips

By Ralph Tolbert, Educational Services Consultant

To reduce our annoyance factor, it helps to change the little things. Following are some examples.

New Software Pop-Up Window
This procedure stops the pop-up window that says new software has been installed:

  • Select Start and right-click where your name is displayed
  • Select Properties
  • Choose the Customize on the Start Menu tab in the Taskbar
  • Select the Start Menu Properties box
  • Check the Advanced tab and clear the Highlight Newly Installed Programs check box

Hide Program Use
A list of your frequently used programs is tracked and updated automatically by XP. If you prefer that this not occur, try this:

  • Right-click on an empty area of the start menu’s left column
  • Select Properties, Start Menu and Customize
  • Choose the General tab, click Clear List and set the counter to zero

Disable Windows Updates
To disable automatic Windows updates, open the System icon in the Control Panel. Choose the Automatic Updating tab and select the radio button.

Auto Hide Taskbar
To auto hide the task bar and start menu, right-click in the taskbar, select Properties and check the Auto Hide box.
