The Akron Fire Department recently
announced that it is lowering the department's applicant
age from 21 to 18 to create an increase in the pool of
local firefighters.
Akron Fire Chief Larry Bunner
said that this is simply a step in conforming Akron's policy
to those of surrounding
cities such as Cuyahoga Falls and Barberton. He believes
that the change will benefit not only those in the new
age group, but also the department.
The change will take
place starting with this fall’s
testing. Many young people have already expressed interest.
